Angioplasty surgery in India

Angioplasty is a heart procedure. Approximately one-third of patients with Coronary Artery Disease (CAD) need to undergo the operation of coronary angioplasty and stenting. There is an awareness shortage about Angioplasty despite the fact that nearly 3 lakh angioplasties are performed every year in India, which have a huge advantage in terms of costs as angiogram cost in India and stent price in India are much lower than their counterparts in other countries.

What is Angioplasty?

Angioplasty, a non-surgical procedure is used to clear and/or unblock the congested arteries which may cause chest pain and, in serious cases, heart attacks. Angioplasty requires a cardiac catheterization laboratory or cath-lab and is performed by expert cardiologists and vascular surgeons. In the process, a catheter is inserted through a wire into the narrowed arteries. The balloon inside the artery is inflated to a fixed size which expands the vessel and then it is deflated and withdrawn. Depending on the method of artery unblocking, Angioplasty is divided mainly into the following types: Balloon angioplasty: It uses a balloon-tipped catheter to remove plaque against the arterial wall for clearing the blocked path. Stent angioplasty: In this process, a small wire metal mesh tube, called a stent is placed in the blocked artery. Cutting Balloon angioplasty: In this process, a cutting balloon catheter with three to five small blades is used. Atherectomy: Atherectomy is done in a cath-lab with rotational and directional atherectomy procedures.
