Bone Marrow Transplant in India

Bone marrow transplant is a critical procedure that infuses a new lease of life in patients who suffer from blood disorders. The bone marrow contains stem cells that produce other vital cells found in the blood, such as Red Blood Cells, White Blood Cells and Platelets etc. Once the stems cells lose the capacity to produce fresh blood cells, the affected bone marrow needs to be substituted by a new and healthy one.

India is a desired destination for bone marrow transplantation. Bone marrow transplantation cost in India being very low, health tourists from various countries come to India to get the transplantation done.

What is bone marrow transplantation (BMT)?

Patients with diseases, such as blood cancers (leukemia, myelodysplasia, lymphoma, and multiple myeloma), congenital neutropenia, aplastic anemia, acute immunodeficiency syndromes, sickle cell anemia, and thalassemia usually need the affected bone marrow to be replaced by the process known as BMT.

Usually, a surgery is not required in BMT, either for the patient or the donor. It is a very safe and secure procedure for a donor as the bone marrow collected is not acquired via surgery or incision. Unlike other types of transplants, such as those for kidneys, no permanent loss of organ is involved in BMT. Stem cells usually start regenerating in few days. The process involves Stem Cells infusion via a live Blood Transfusion into the patient’s body.
