Cholesteatoma Treatment

When the skin in the middle ear behind the eardrum starts growing abnormally, it is called cholesteatoma. This is a noncancerous cyst, but it can prove to be harmful and destroys ears. In some people, this is by birth while in others the cause is repeated ear infection. As the dead cells gather, it grows in size and damages the middle ear bones.

What are the reasons behind the formation of cholesteatoma?

The symptoms of cholesteatoma are very much docile. As the cyst in the middle ear grows, the whole ear starts paining.

Initially, the ear starts draining a foul smelling liquid.

By using an otoscope, the doctor will examine your ear and will check if there is any sign of growing cyst in your middle ear. To be more précised they will look for the deposition of dead cells or large mass in a particular area.

If there are not any physical signs of cholesteatoma, but there are symptoms, then the doctor will order for CT scan because it will capture the cross sectional images of the ear and the skull. This imaging test will help them in a better way to visualize the growth of the cyst.

How to Treat the Disease?

When the doctor finds out that the patient is suffering from chloesteatoma, s/he prescribes to carefully clean up the ear with ear drops as it might reduce the cyst and drain the ear. The most common treatment is the surgical removal of the cyst before it spreads in all the parts of the ear. Through surgery, the cyst can be removed entirely. You aren't required to stay in the hospital after the surgery, but in case if the cyst is large and you got a severe infection, you may be asked to stay. In most of the cases, a follow up surgery is required to reconstruct the damaged portions of the ear.

After Procedure

There are not many side effects or complications after the surgery. It’s better to take some precautions and visit your doctor for a regular checkup to ensure that the cyst is not getting back. Follow up appointments will help the doctors to evaluate the results in a better way. Taste abnormalities and dizziness can be temporarily there. To prevent the cyst from coming back, always treat the ear infection on time without any delay and negligence.
