Did you know that there are people who are allergic to latex? Well, yes! There are some people who are allergic to latex which is found in rubber gloves, condoms and many other products. The people who are more likely to get affected by this kind of allergy are the people with a defect in bone marrow cells, who had more than one operation, people who have asthma, allergy or eczema, people having food allergies to avocados, chestnuts, bananas or kiwis. You can get into contact with latex by skin, inhaling, genital parts or blood. Latex reactions are of three types and they are irritant contact dermatitis (least threatening type caused because of repeated exposure to latex chemicals), allergic contact dermatitis (same reactions like in irritant contact dermatitis but more severe) and immediate allergic reaction (most serious type with symptoms like cramps, conjunctivitis, nasal allergy, severe itching and other rare symptoms like low blood pressure, chest pain, trouble breathing, etc.)
The latex allergy is like any other allergy and off course needs treatment too. The treatment includes the medications like antihistamine or corticosteroid medicines for irritant contact dermatitis. If the problem is severe, then IV fluids, epinephrine can be given. If someone is suffering from this allergy, do not take it lightly. Consult a doctor and get it treated soon.
