Depression is a mental health disease and so is major depression which is also known as clinical depression. There are many people who feel low or sad at certain points in life but there are some, who feel sad for most of the day and lose their interest in relationships and normal activities and this stays for more than two weeks at least. There are some other symptoms also that can be seen and they includes insomnia or excessive sleeping, recurring suicidal thoughts, diminished pleasure or interest in almost every activity every day, worthlessness feeling or guilty feeling almost every day, loss of energy or fatigue, indecisiveness, significant weight fain or weight loss.
This clinical depression or major depression can affect anyone. The women are at higher risk than men, especially during hormonal changes like pregnancy, puberty, menstruation, menopause and miscarriage. Men, on the other hand, are less likely to seek for help. The symptoms include anger, irritability, drug and alcohol abuse. They can also have violent behavior which is because of suppressing negative feelings and can eventually lead to homicide, illness or suicide.
So, this mental problem can be deadly but can be treated. The treatment for this problem includes antidepressant medications, psychotherapy or talk therapy, electroconvulsive therapy or ECT. The problem looks normal but must not be ignored.
